From Heroes to Zeros…Sunbury 5 – Wimbledon 4

Match report delayed to helping Lineker this week…

…and Liverpool FC obviously took inspiration from The Lions’ famous victory over Teddington last week.

This week saw The Lions play host to our friends from Wimbledon.

With the goals and Team spirit flowing freely from the last game, what could possibly go wrong?

With Robin absent, Conrad made us all stand in a circle before the game and The Lions were confident of performing circus tricks again this week…

…the problem was no one was paying attention…

…or prepared to put any work in…

The Lions were on the back foot from the start.

The vast majority of any Lions’ passes to start with were akin to a dog’s owner throwing a stick – and the dog saying – “You threw the flipping thing – you go and get it!”

The sleepy Labradors up front did manage to create a few chances but surprised by some outstanding goalkeeping by the Wimbledon goalkeeper, sulked when the ball did not go in the net and was accelerated in the wrong direction towards The Lions’ goal by an extremely competent Wimbledon side.

Eager to please the opposition, The Lions’ defence decided to roll over to have their tummys tickled in the first half and before too long The Lions were 4-0 down after 25 minutes.

We know Roy really not mind it being mentioned that he scored his second own goal of the Season at this point. Think one of the Wimbledon chaps gave him a biscuit for this.

Jitz however then decided to lick up a few crumbs off the floor left from some Collie-Crosses – and just before half time, hope regained at 2-4 down.

Conrad then made us all stand in another circle at half-time and told us to fetch sticks and go and play a proper game.

The Lion’s defence then started growling and the Blood Hounds upfront were on the scent.

Faithful St Bernard, John Lodge, stopped the previous avalanche of goals with a couple of fantastic saves, earning him a brandy from the barrel.

Rich D then became top sniffer dog, bagging 2 goals to draw level, with 10 to go…

…and then Connie became a boisterous Chihuahua – and scored the winner within the last 2 minutes!

Wimbledon were, quite rightly, disappointed with the result but particularly compared to the week before were generous in defeat and handshakes all round. A great team to play against and played in the right spirit by both sides.

The game could have been won by either side but The Lions came out top dogs this time around.
