Men’s 2nd XI
2010-11 Promoted as Runners-Up from Surrey Open Premier Division
Captain – Seb Hymas
Vice – Joe Croft
18th Feb v Old Georgians (home) W 3-2
The Men’s second XI came from behind to take all 3 points in their first home tie since 12th November. Having not played which each other for a few weeks the rust needed a thorough dusting off and it took the entire first half to do so. Old Georgians were never really on top but were 2-0 up at the break, 2 short corners converted one off of Lil Rob’s stick and the other a nice drag flick just inside the left post. A royal rollicking from Captain Seb saw an improved passing display that started to open up the defence of OG’s, the midfield managed to gain better composure and it started to reap rewards. The first goal was a cool conversion from Nick Dowdeswell, the second at not dissimilar goal from Seb himself and then with 5 minutes to go a thunderbolt pass from Nicco skimmed past Tommy T only for the OG’s left back to suggest the ball be left, not noticing Delaney skipping in behind and deflecting the goal into the back of the net. Now in the lead the Hawks lost composure but held onto take a valuable win before preparing to face Kenley who stuffed them 5-1 in the home leg.
04th Feb – No game
28th Jan v Bannes 4s (away) W 6-0
The Men’s 2’s travelled to Dukes Meadow to face Barnes in the late afternoon winter sun with their strongest squad of the season. A spritely starting line-up pressed hard from the off and after gaining composure at the back attacked for what felt like 68 minutes. A number of chances were wasted in the opening exchanges as the players took time to the bobbling surface but it wasn’t long before the goals started to come. With Damo & Seb up front both keen to score at every opportunity it was a uncharacteristic display of quality passing hockey. Damo bagged himself a brace and then a goal each for Seb, Delaney, RVP and Nicco Dowdeswell all created by some visually exciting hockey. 6-0 and their first clean sheet in some time gives great confidence for their much anticipated return to The Nest this Saturday (the boys haven’t played at home since 12th November).
07th Jan 2012 v Merton 2s W 5-3
The Men’s 2’s weren’t initially scheduled a game this Saturday but due to the icy pitch before Christmas the replay against Merton was pencilled in. Sitting 7th in only a 10 team league and after mixing the squads up over Christmas it now fell on the new Captain Seb to bring home a result against the 6th place opposition. With no obvious centre back on the team sheet, Rich Jones dropped back a few yards but it wasn’t long before the Christmas break and disorganisation got the better of the Hawks as Merton took the lead. Within minutes The Hawks had pulled it level as Guy Campbell scrambled the ball in at the near post. Despite stepping up 2 divisions, Seb proved the decision to promote him was a good one with his first of 3 goals on the day and then the ex-captain staked his claim on the match bagging another to give The Hawks a 3-1 lead at half time. The second half saw some weary legs, not used to doing anything on a Saturday but The Hawks were still finding space and should have scored a hatful more. Seb’s additional 2 were equalled by Merton in the second half making the final score 5-3. The Hawks jump them in to 6th place but are 4 points behind 5th place Epsom and now face top of the league NPL on the road this Saturday.
