Ladies 2nd XI

Ladies 2XI

The ladies 2s play in Surrey Div 4

Captain – Verity Rolfe

11th Feb v Cheam 2s ( home) W 6-0

The Ladies 2’s followed on in the 4pm home game and an even more impressive performance that saw a very one sided affair against Cheam. After the opposition had been told the game would go ahead they made the trip to The Nest to inspect at 1pm and were muttering about filing a dispute over the pitches condition. There was nothing to complain about and both umpires deemed the pitch playable. After an exciting exchange the Hawks settled into their stride and inform Emily Ray bagged a brace, failing to appease the side-line fans begging for more Robot Dance Moves. Additional goals came from Beth Gibbons, Tonic, Nicki Workingman and Christine Lancaster in a brilliant display of well-timed runs and passing perfection. Additional praise has to go to Amy & Lauren for their efforts, both made a huge difference to the game and also the loyal fans that embraced the cold weather and continued to sing long into the night! The 6-0 victory was also the only game played in Surrey Div 4 so moves The Hawks into 2nd place above Woking, a massive mental boost for the last push of the season.

04th Feb v Woking Vets D 1-1

The only Ladies team that managed to get some action was the Ladies 2’s as they visited 2nd place Woking Vets in what was to be a very physical game. Despite having the word Vets in their name these Ladies were surprisingly agile and their movement off of the ball was exemplary. A really well worked goal saw them take the lead with a nice passing exchange leading to a cool finish to the far post. The Hawks continued to battle but their passing wasn’t as crisp as usual and they lacked composure on the ball. Their hard work was rewarded however when a scrappy exchange was finished by Nicki Workingman from about 4 yards. The Hawks soaked up most of the pressure, Imi defending solidly from sweeper but the midfield was where Woking appeared stronger. The game did run out 1-1 which in review did neither team any harm as their closest rivals Wayfarers only picked up a point as well.

28th Jan v Kenley SP 1s (home) W 2-1

The Ladies 2’s hosted Top of The League and unbeaten Kenley in the 11.30am game at home but the visitors showed no sign of a team that were already 7 points clear at the top of the table. From the first whistle the Hawks looked the stronger side, beating their oppo to the ball, getting just as stuck in and soaking up some physical challenges. About 15 minutes played a short corner was converted when Emily Ray managed to find the bottom corner and duly celebrated with her trademark dance moves. The 2’s defence never really looked troubled and soaked up a spell of pressure late in the first half and managed to stop the Kenley forwards from getting many solid shots on goal. Sam Rolfe had the difficult task of battling up the left side but did a brilliant job, as did Joce with some fantastic work rate and dominating a familiar Kenley face in Thirsty Kirsty (did anyone else think she was looking slightly fuller in figure?) Beth Gibbons was causing constant threats up front and the second half continued in much the same way before a run up the wing by Nicky Workingman allowed her to cross the ball into Serena who put the ball away cleanly. 2-0 up the Hawks didn’t look finished and continued to dominate. Kenley did however manage to fumble home a goal but it wasn’t enough to prevent their first defeat of the season. 2nd place Woking lost to Barnes so The Hawks now join them on points, albeit 3rd on goal difference.

21st Jan v Guildford Ladies 3 (home) W 3-0

The Ladies 2’s leap frogged Cheam with a win over Guidlford with a fine display that ended 3-0. Goals from Captain Verity, Nicki Workingman and a Penalty Stroke converted by Emily Ray in the final minutes should give great confidence before they also host Top of the League Kenly at home.
