Club History:

Walton & Weybridge HC

A Brief History Of The Club

Walton Hockey Club was formed in 1932 as a mixed team under the leadership of Captain Tottenham M.C. Soon after, the club included separate mens and ladies matches. However due to the outbreak of war in 1939 most of the men were called up into service and the club went in to virtual hibernation untill 1945.

During the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s the clubs ladies team was highly successful, rarely fielding a non-county player and including more than one international player. One that stands out the most is Jo Ross Smith, who held the record for scoring the most individual number of goals in a single game, when she scored 5 goals against Ireland.

In the 60’s the men’s team were gaining their share of success and by now were fielding 4 Saturday teams and in the late 70’s and early 80′s the men’s 1st XI won Surrey Div 1, were promoted from the Hampshire/Surrey regional league after 2 seasons and then spent 3 years in the South League achieving as high as 3rd place.

1995 saw the merger of Walton HC and Weybridge Hawks to become Walton and Weybridge Hawks Hockey Club. Within the first few weeks of the merger all the 1st XI and most of the 2nd XI players left to form Old Georgian HC. This proved too much for the club and they had to withdraw the 1st XI from the Surrey Hants League.

In 1997 WWHHC moved from their original pitch at Ashley Park, Walton and moved to the Vandals Rugby Club on Desborough Island but continued to play the home matches at Reeds School, Cobham. When the prospect of a new Astroturf pitch at the Vandals failed to materialise, St Paul’s Catholic College, Sunbury proposed a joint venture to lay a new astroturf pitch and have a clubhouse in the school grounds.

The club then paid £25,000 towards the cost of the pitch and a further £50,000+ to refurbish the old pavilion which was virtually derelict and unused, to produce a new bar area, new kitchen and new men and ladies changing rooms and “The Hawks Nest” was born!

In the spring of 2000 the new pitch was opened and soon after we started a Ladies team who quickly moved up the leagues to Surrey Div 4.

Sunbury HC

Sunbury Hockey Club, South West London, was a constituent member of the Sunbury Sports Association, & with over 300 members it has 9 adult teams participating in competitive league hockey and a thriving Colts Section. Sunbury Hockey Club has also achieved England Hockey’s Clubs First accreditation which confirms the club has all the necessary Child Protection procedures in place and provides an active colts programme in a child friendly environment.

The ethos of Sunbury Hockey Club is and always has been one of social fun and great team hockey. We hold numerous social events each year ranging from the more formal annual Christmas Pub Crawl and Dinner and Dance, to the less formal Scandinavian Evenings, School Discos and Games Evenings; evidence of which can be found under the events section of this web site.
